Method 1: Use Freeform Tool to Draw on MS Word

In case of not finding the very specific shape in the collection of predefined shapes, Freeform tool is the best option to create freestyle shapes. Here is how it works;

Here you will find two different types of tools;

#1: Using Scribble Tool

It is used for drawing the exact shape you desire;

Click on the Insert tab, and select Shapes option.

Click on Scribble tool.

Select the place on page where you want to create shape.

Click on the place, hold your curser, and drag it until holding.

After completing the shape, simply double click on the page. And here you have done.

# Using Shapes Tool

It allows you to draw straight or curve lines;

 Click on the Insert tab, and select Shapes option.

Click on Shapes tool.

Select the place on page where you want to create shape.

Click on the point, drag your mouse, and take it to the end point.

Double click at the end-point, you have successfully created your required line, even in case of unsteady hand’s movement.

Method 2: Use Text Wrapping Option to Draw around your Text

You can use Format tab for text wrapping, even for irregular shape. Here is how it works;

Click on Draw tab, and select Shape Format tab.

Click Wrap Text, and select any one option

  1. Square
  2. In line with text
  3. Through
  4. Tight
  5. Top & Bottom
  6. Behind Text
  7. In front of Text

Click and drag your cursor to format the text wrapping.

Similarly, you can use wrap text option around an irregular shape by pursuing the given steps;

Click on Draw tab, and select Shape Format tab.

Click on Arrange > Wrap Text > Edit Wrap Boundary.

Click on your required boundary point, and make changes.

Method 3: Fill Color & Outline Color in your Drawing

As we aforementioned, you can use predefined shapes using Format tab, and create your own shapes using Scribble tool, or freestyle shapes. Here we will discuss how to fill color and outline color in our shapes;

Use Fill Color

Click on Format tab, and select Predefined style option.

After selecting your shape, click on Shape Fill, and select the color you want to apply.

Change Outline Color

Select the drawing, and click Shape Outline option, and apply your selected color.

Likewise you can add shadows, effects, and text to your drawing using the Shape Effect option.

Method 4: Use Pen Tools to Draw on MS Word

If you want to create some complicated drawing on MS Word, you need to apply Pen tools for the purpose. You will find in Draw tab different ink types i.e. pen, pencil, highlighter, etc. these ink types help you to change the look and style of your drawing.

Click on Draw button, and select the ink type, use your mouse, and click the drawing, and drag your cursor to complete your drawing.

Click on drop-down menu to select your favorite color from 16 standard colors. You can get more by clicking on More Colors.

Moreover, the Pen ink type has special eight effects i.e. Rainbow, Galaxy, Lava, Ocean, Bronze, Rose Gold, Silver, and Gold.

You can divide your lengthy drawing into groups to handle them easily. Click the entire elements of drawing while pressing and holding the Shift key as well.

Click on Shape > Format > Arrange > Group > Group

Now, you are ready to handle your drawing separately. 

Method 5: Add a Drawing to Word Document

If you don’t want to create your own drawing for your document, you can add different style drawing i.e. SmartArt, pictures, charts, clip art, WordArt, flowcharts, diagrams, and so on.

Select the place in the document where you want to add drawing.

Click Insert and next on shapes to select the piece of drawing you want to extract.

Method 6: Edit your Drawing

If you are not satisfied with your created or added drawing to your MS Word document, you can edit easily. Here is how it works;

Select your drawing, and click on the Edit Shape under the Shape Format.

Click on the Edit Points to start editing.

Here you are allowed to change color, weight, or add fill color.

You can change the style by selecting the Themes Styles and Presets section.

Change the weight of drawing by clicking on Shape Format > Shape Outline > Weight.

Click on Shape Format to select Shape Effects and apply special effects.

Method 7: Erase Your Drawing

MS Word drawing tool has Erase tool for removing the unwanted parts or mistakes. When you select it from the drop-down menu, you will find three types to select such as;

  • Small Eraser for erasing the small area.
  • Medium Eraser is for erasing the large area.
  • Stroke Eraser is for erasing the entire stroke.

When you select Small or Medium Eraser, you need to delete the specific part or line by clicking, holding, and dragging your mouse over the part.

Method 8: Use Trackpad to Draw on MS Word

If you want to use trackpad in spite of mouse for drawing in MS Word, You need to follow the given steps;

Click on Draw tab, and select the ink type.

Toggle on the Draw with Trackpad tool.

On top of your document, a new window will appear, you can move it anywhere on your document using two fingers on your trackpad.

Select the area where you want to draw, press Command key, and draw while moving one finger on your trackpad.
