On Wednesday, YouTube announced the changing of views counting for YouTube Shorts, which will give creators ease of understanding and allow them to monitor the performance of their short-form content. The change will work similarly to other social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, etc. It will be applied from March 31st and change the previous counting of views. As YouTube says in the update;

“We hope that this deeper understanding of your Shorts performance will help you inform your content strategy, better represent your work to potential brand or agency partners, and give you a fuller picture of your overall reach if you’re posting on multiple platforms!”

 The upcoming system will avoid the requirement of minimum watch time and start counting as soon as the video plays or replays, as compared to the current system where a view is counted after a watch time with a minimum number of seconds. The current views counting process will also be preserved within the new name “engaged views” to replicate “Advanced Mode” within YouTube Analytics.

The reason for changing the View Counts for short-form content, as explained by YouTube, is to facilitate the creators to know how much time the Shorts are seen. It will help the creators to offer their services to the related potential brand partners while offering their content strategy and reliably displaying the full extent of their reach.

No doubt, the upcoming count system will increase the view counts, but there isn’t any change in monetization status, as confirmed by YouTube that the new system couldn’t affect YPP earnings, and will continually based on the “engaged views” such as 4,000 valid public watch hours with 1,000 subscribers within one year, or 10 million valid public Shorts views with 1,000 subscribers within 3 months.
